BELLATRIX
Not only is Bellatrix is one of the very few performing female beatboxers worldwide, but she is also an exceptionally talented all round musician majoring in the electric bass and double bass. Currently studying jazz at one of the top conservatoires in Europe, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Bellatrix is exploring her identity as a musician and pushing boundaries with her unique and distinctive musical character. Having built up her prominence on the contemporary beatboxing scene, Bellatrix is now exploiting her musical talent and experimenting with ways in which she can propel beatboxing into new, less covered ground. Over the past few years she has been incorporating live sampling stations, FX modules, musical instruments and other musicians into her live sets, exploring further purpose for beatboxing, other than the emulation of a drum kit and a crowd pleasing showcase act. One of her most recent projects, the ‘Boxettes’, is an all female vocal group who push the boundaries of what is ‘possible’ with the female voice at the same time as putting on a spine-tingling and soulful upbeat performance. In 2006, Bellatrix became the first and only female beatboxer ever to compete in the official UK Beatboxing Championships, and was the youngest participant to reach the finals. Still the only lady involved, 2007 saw Bellatrix finish the competition in 3rd place, and in 2008 she became the first female judge. The UK has yet to see another woman surpass all judgment and exceed the reality of a male dominated beatboxing scene, and with such disregard of issue. For Bellatrix, objective is quality and sincerity of performance and material. As well as possessing the rare ability of being able to captivate any audience single-handed, Bellatrix is both a great group leader, and an excellent teacher. She has been involved in a number of groundbreaking projects and collaborations including Shlomo’s prestigious vocal orchestra, featuring the legendary Swingle Singers, and has worked internationally working in places such as New York, Spain and Austria, to name a few. There seems to be only one direction for this young woman, and it ain’t backwards, so let’s watch as Bellatrix combats the future and possibility of beatboxing music and see where her journey takes her.

Their live show consists of a minimum 2-piece concoction of infectious music on 2 decks and 2 mics to make any crowd
shake their stuff, with a positive party vibe comprising hiphop, funk, soul, reggae and breaks, more prankster than
gangster, delivering fits of happiness to anyone within hearing range.
The set features CARPETFACE performing tracks from his critically acclaimed double-album ?HAVE MIC, WILL TRAVEL?
mc'ing, singing, beatboxing with maximum crowd involvement. Add to this the simply wrong beatboxing and turntable
skills of AUDIBLE PORNO (winner Battlescarrs national 2005) with no-holds-barred solo material, doublebeatbox improjams,
vocal scratching and mad free-for-all sections throughout the show.
The GOOSENECK STEPPERS will hold any venue in awe with both their individual and combined skills and brand new
material, the tightness of their freestyle interplay and crowd-moving DJ selections and cuts either side of the live set. Also
available when the budget allows, is a set which includes live drums and bass, with Carpet jumping between the mic and
drumkit and live basslines played by the phat fingers of occasional 3rd member "Cous".

Dan and Jason met through Bristol vegans about a couple of years ago now where they discovered that in addition to both being involved in varous political movements including Anti-Fascist Action since the early nineties, they also had a mutual interest in music. Jason has drummed for a number of bands - most notably the Blaggers who he still gigs with - whilst Dan has played bass in a couple as well whose musical styles have varied from punk to Bhangra. Dan has also made his own computer based music which can be found at www.myspace.com/danthorntonmusic. The band formed with the aim of making music for people to dance to and since then, have gradually evolved into a live drum and bass project. After trying out a few singers (and after the singers trying them out!), Leiza has been singing with them for about six months now. Leiza has brought lyrically intelligent vocals to a mix of live drumming and computer generated samples and synth lines to create a sound that went live at their debut gig at the end of April 2008. Following the success of this gig, we’re playing again at the Queens Head, Easton, Bristol on Saturday 24th May (see below)with many more planned to follow.
