Do you ever:
A simple question to be answered honestly?

Do you ever download and LISTEN to mixes from New DJ's and then give them a honest unbiased review and tips on what they are doing right or wrong?

I honestly think there are a lot of people who are too scared to ask that question, I wonder why?

Doesn't it depend on who does it? Mixes from the big names are like freebies, DJs who are just starting out often need constructive criticism in order to progress, horses for courses i reckon?

Now that is a very good valid point, but idealy, one should say: In my opinion you should: blah blahh blahhh etc.

Admittedly, I have fergotten to say that too many times.

If someone directly asks for feedback I will give it. But feedback is so personal and who is to say I am right! I won't post something negative on a public forum though - I would rather message someone personally. I think positive constructive criticism is the way forward. There will generally be something good to say about the mix. I had someone say something really harsh about one of the first mixes I put up for download and I was really upset at the time. Looking back he was spot on though.....

I think it's really important when giving feedback on anything to make it a positive exercise and not let it turn into a soul-destroying knocking session.

So for example say I got sent a mix with wicked tune selection but some dodgy mixes, I'd work out what is going wrong in the mix (usually you can spot a pattern of incoming beats running fast or slow, levels too sharp, misplaced EQ etc) and then turn that into a positive spin, for example:-

"Great tune selection, really liked the way you mixed X into Y. On a couple of mixes I noticed that you ran fast/slow/loud. Here's how to fix it...." and so make it into a positive education session.

It is good to read what both of you had commented, K8-e & AJay and it also shows how professionally tactful both of you are.

Now this is a comment I had made last night on another group-page which I had made lat night, I had copied and pasted it below:

I like it, even though it isn't what I normally listen to.

The bass sounds solid, the mid-range with the vocals is clear, keeping to the mid-frequencies and the trebble is sweet without it shredding one's eardrums.

Yes I do like it and it is worth keeping, so it will go to a compilation CD with different genres of Rave!

10/10 on that, there is nothing wrong with it, and I cannot wait to get it onto that compilation cd, so I can hear it the way it should be heard!
